Phosphate transporters are integral membrane proteins that mediate the movement of inorganic phosphate ions across biological membranes in cells, playing critical roles in systemic and cellular phosphate homeostasis[8][3][4]. The two main families involved are the SLC34 (NaPi-II) and SLC20 (PiT) sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporters, which are responsible for intestinal absorption, renal reabsorption, and uptake into various tissues[3][4]. These transporters are regulated by hormonal and metabolic cues and are implicated in disorders of bone, kidney, and mineral metabolism[3][4][8][10]. Phosphate ion transport is thus a key physiological process and the transporters mediating this function are valid molecular drug targets in diseases involving disturbed phosphate regulation.
