Phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PEMT)

Target
PEMT
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transferase, Methyltransferase
01

Overview

Phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PEMT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) to form phosphatidylcholine (PC). It is primarily localized in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria-associated membranes, especially in liver cells. PEMT plays a critical role in maintaining membrane integrity, regulating VLDL secretion, and contributing to choline homeostasis. Deficiency or dysregulation of PEMT can lead to various metabolic disturbances, including steatohepatitis and increased susceptibility to NAFLD. PEMT activity is regulated by substrate/product availability, hormonal factors, and genetic variants.
