Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase regulatory subunit alpha is an enzyme encoded by the PIK3R1 gene in humans. It serves as a critical regulatory component of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), a family of lipid kinases that play essential roles in numerous cellular processes. It regulates the activity of the PI3K enzyme, stabilizes the catalytic subunit, recruits PI3K to the plasma membrane, and mediates the association of the catalytic unit to the plasma membrane. Mutations in PIK3R1 are implicated in cancer, SHORT syndrome, and insulin resistance. It is a promising drug target in cancer and immune disorders.
