Phosphine (PH3) is a highly toxic, colorless, and flammable inorganic gas primarily utilized as a pesticide and fumigant for stored grains and in the semiconductor industry (PubChem CID 24403). It is not a therapeutic target; rather, it is a potent systemic toxin that disrupts cellular respiration by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV) in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (StatPearls: Phosphine Toxicity). This inhibition leads to the cessation of oxidative phosphorylation and the generation of lethal reactive oxygen species, causing widespread oxidative damage and cellular death (PubMed: PMC5684393). Clinical exposure typically results in multi-organ failure, with the cardiovascular and respiratory systems being most severely affected, often leading to fatal outcomes such as profound hypotension and pulmonary edema (CDC: NIOSH Pocket Guide).
