Overview

Phosphodiesterase 6B (PDE6B) is the beta subunit of the rod photoreceptor cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase (PDE6), a key enzyme in the phototransduction cascade of vertebrate vision. The enzyme hydrolyzes cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to closure of cGMP-gated ion channels and hyperpolarization of rod cells in response to light, thus transmitting visual signals from rods to downstream neurons. Mutations in PDE6B are linked to several inherited retinal diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa and congenital stationary night blindness.
