Phosphodiesterase type III (PDE3) is an enzyme family that hydrolyzes the second messengers cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), playing a crucial role in regulating intracellular signaling pathways. PDE3 is particularly significant in cardiovascular tissues, where it modulates heart muscle contractility, vascular smooth muscle tone, and platelet aggregation.
Inhibition of PDE3 increases intracellular cAMP and cGMP levels, leading to increased cardiac contractility and vasodilation. In platelets, increased cAMP inhibits aggregation through PKA activation.
