Phosphofructokinase (PFK)

Target
PFK
Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Phosphofructokinase (PFK) is a key regulatory enzyme in the glycolytic pathway, responsible for catalyzing the phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate using ATP. It acts as a metabolic gatekeeper controlling glucose breakdown rate according to cellular needs. PFK exists as a homotetramer in bacteria and mammals and is allosterically regulated by ATP, AMP, and fructose 2,6-bisphosphate.
