Overview

Phosphoglycerate mutase 1 pseudogene 12 (PGAM1P12) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome[1]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and have lost the ability to encode functional proteins due to mutations or deletions. PGAM1P12 shares homology with the phosphoglycerate mutase 1 gene (PGAM1), which encodes an active enzyme involved in glycolysis[2][3], but PGAM1P12 itself does not produce a functional protein and is not expressed as part of known biological pathways nor implicated in disease. PGAM1P12 should not be confused with the functional enzyme phosphoglycerate mutase 1 (PGAM1), which is an established metabolic enzyme and therapeutic target, particularly in cancer research[4][3]. As a pseudogene, PGAM1P12 lacks biological activity and is not considered a true molecular target.
