Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase–AKT Pathway

Molecular classification
Signaling pathway
01

Overview

The phosphoinositide 3-kinase-AKT (PI3K-AKT) pathway is a highly conserved intracellular signaling cascade that plays a central role in regulating diverse cellular processes, including metabolism, growth, proliferation, survival, protein synthesis, transcription, and apoptosis. It is activated by various extracellular signals such as growth factors (e.g., EGF), hormones (e.g., insulin), cytokines, and other stimuli through receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), integrins, and immune cell receptors. Dysregulation or hyperactivation of this pathway is implicated in many diseases.
