Phospholipases are a group of enzymes that hydrolyze phospholipids, playing crucial roles in lipid metabolism, cell signaling, membrane remodeling, and the generation of bioactive lipid mediators involved in inflammation and disease processes. The main classes are PLA1, PLA2, PLC, and PLD, each cleaving a different bond in the phospholipid molecule. Products of phospholipase activity act as second messengers, regulate inflammation, influence membrane trafficking, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and participate in host defense mechanisms. Dysregulation of phospholipase activity is implicated in various diseases.
Phospholipases hydrolyze phospholipids, breaking them down into fatty acids and other lipophilic substances. Different classes cleave different bonds within the phospholipid molecule (PLA1, PLA2, PLC, PLD).
