Phospholipase A1 (PLA1) is an enzyme that specifically hydrolyzes the ester bond at the sn-1 position of glycerophospholipids, resulting in the production of a free fatty acid and a 2-acyl-lysophospholipid. It plays roles in membrane remodeling, digestion (in some organisms), and the production of lysophospholipid mediators like LPA and LysoPS. Activity has been detected extracellularly and intracellularly. Structurally, it features a Gly-X-Ser-X-Gly motif and a Ser-Asp-His catalytic triad. Commercial production is limited by purification and expression challenges.
