Overview

Phosphorylase kinase catalytic subunit gamma 1 (PHKG1) is a serine/threonine protein kinase and the catalytic component of the 16-subunit phosphorylase kinase complex, which contains equimolar ratios of four subunit types[1][2][8]. PHKG1 is essential for the neural and hormonal regulation of glycogen breakdown (glycogenolysis), primarily through phosphorylating and activating glycogen phosphorylase in skeletal muscle and heart[1][2][8]. Dysfunction in PHKG1 can result in glycogen storage disease type IXd, implicating its key role in metabolic homeostasis[1][2]. There are no known approved drugs that selectively target PHKG1 as of current data.
