Overview

Phosphorylated microtubule-associated protein tau (p-tau) is a post-translationally modified form of the tau protein that plays a critical role in stabilizing and promoting the assembly of microtubules in neurons. Hyperphosphorylation of tau leads to its detachment from microtubules, aggregation, and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles, which are hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Pathologically phosphorylated forms of tau are central biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis/progression tracking and are actively being pursued as therapeutic targets. Therapeutic strategies under investigation include kinase inhibitors, aggregation inhibitors, oligonucleotides reducing expression, and immunotherapeutics.
