The photoreceptor cell-specific nuclear receptor (**PNR**), encoded by the **NR2E3** gene, is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of intracellular transcription factors[1][5]. It is expressed exclusively in the retina, where it promotes rod photoreceptor specification and maintenance by regulating the transcription of genes such as rhodopsin and various opsins essential for sight[1][3][5]. There are candidate modulatory drugs, including retinoids and synthetic allosteric regulators, that may provide new treatments for retinitis pigmentosa by refining NR2E3-mediated transcriptional control[1].
