The photoreceptor layer of the retina is an anatomical layer at the back of the eye, composed mainly of rod and cone cells, whose primary function is to absorb photons and transduce light into electrical signals that are processed by other retinal neurons and ultimately create visual perception. Rod cells are responsible for vision in low-light conditions, while cone cells mediate color and high-acuity vision in brighter environments. This layer underlies much of human visual function and is essential for sight; its dysfunction or loss leads to various forms of blindness and visual impairment[1][4][5][9].
