Overview

A photosensitiser is a molecule that absorbs light and converts it into another form of energy, typically transferring this energy to nearby molecules. Upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, the photosensitiser enters an excited state and can induce physicochemical changes in substrates, most notably the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). They are widely used in photodynamic therapy, solar energy harvesting, fluorescence imaging, and photocatalysis. Photosensitisers return chemically unchanged after reaction.
