Overview

Physical ablation of tumor tissue refers to a variety of minimally invasive procedures in which energy (heat, cold, or other modalities) is delivered directly to tumor cells using probes, needles, or catheters. These procedures include radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, cryoablation, ethanol injection, and high-intensity focused ultrasound, and are performed under imaging guidance to maximize precision and minimize collateral damage. Physical ablation is commonly used to treat localized cancers or benign tumors in patients who are not suitable for surgery, and its goal is to destroy or shrink tumor tissue while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. It is a technique, not a specific biological target.
