Physical activity behavior

01

Overview

Physical activity behavior refers to any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that increases energy expenditure above resting or basal levels[1][3][5][7]. This includes a wide range of activities, from exercise and sport to daily movement such as walking, climbing stairs, or household chores. Physical activity behavior is distinct from sedentary behavior (e.g., sitting or reclining with low energy expenditure) and inactivity (not meeting minimum recommended levels of activity)[1][3]. While physical activity has profound effects on health, reduces the risk of non-communicable diseases (such as obesity and cardiovascular disease), and is a major public health focus[5], it is not a "target" in the sense of a discrete biological molecule or receptor suitable for drug targeting or molecular intervention. Instead, it is a modifiable behavior with genetic, physiological, and social determinants; scientific interventions often aim to alter or promote this behavior to improve population health[1][3][5][7]. Recent research does identify molecular changes and genetic factors *influenced by* (or *predisposing to*) physical activity behavior, but "physical activity behavior" itself is not a molecule, receptor, or gene[2][4][6].
