Overview

Physical activity reduction (sedentary behavior) refers to the state or trend of decreasing frequency, intensity, or duration of physical movement in daily life. Unlike molecules or receptors, it is a behavioral and environmental risk factor—not a molecular entity—linked to increased risks for numerous chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndromes, cancer, and neuropsychiatric conditions. Prolonged sedentary behavior disrupts metabolism and hormonal regulation, increases inflammation and stress vulnerability, and leads to poorer executive functioning and mood. Public health guidelines uniformly recommend increasing physical activity to prevent or mitigate these risks.
