Physical attenuation of X-rays by iodine atoms

Molecular classification
Element, Contrast Agent
01

Overview

The physical attenuation of X-rays by iodine atoms refers to the process by which iodine, due to its high atomic number (Z = 53), absorbs and scatters X-ray photons more effectively than most biological tissues. This property is exploited in medical imaging, particularly in computed tomography (CT) and other X-ray-based modalities, where iodinated contrast agents are used to enhance image contrast between different tissues or vascular structures. The attenuation of X-rays occurs primarily through Compton scattering and photoelectric absorption. Photoelectric absorption is highly dependent on the atomic number (Z) of the material; higher Z materials like iodine have much greater photoelectric absorption compared to soft tissue elements. Iodine’s K-shell binding energy (K-edge) is 33.2 keV, making it especially effective at absorbing X-rays at these energies.
