Physical moisturization

01

Overview

Physical moisturization is a physiological process and skincare mechanism, not a discrete molecular entity, therapeutic target molecule, or receptor in the biomedical sense. It describes the functional outcome of various topical agents (occlusives, humectants, emollients) working to enhance skin hydration and barrier function. While specific molecular components like aquaporins, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid are involved in skin hydration, 'physical moisturization' itself refers to the broader mechanism of action for skincare products rather than a specific protein, enzyme, transporter, or molecular target for drug binding. Therefore, it cannot be structured as a therapeutic target for drug discovery or development.

02

Mechanism of action

Physical moisturization is a process involving three main types of skincare ingredients: occlusives (e.g., petrolatum, dimethicone) that physically block transepidermal water loss by forming a protective barrier; humectants (e.g., glycerin) that attract water into the stratum corneum; and emollients (e.g., oils, fatty acids) that smooth skin by filling spaces between skin cells.
