Overview

Physical occlusion refers to the mechanical or physical blockage of a biological conduit, such as a blood vessel, duct, or organ lumen (StatPearls, 2023). It is not a molecular target in the traditional sense, such as a protein or receptor, but rather a physiological or pathological state or a therapeutic mechanism (PubMed, PMID: 31536312). In a therapeutic context, physical occlusion is intentionally induced through interventional procedures like embolization to treat conditions such as arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, or hypervascular tumors (NIH, 2022). By obstructing the flow of blood or other fluids, clinicians can induce localized ischemia or prevent life-threatening hemorrhages. Various agents, including mechanical coils, liquid embolic agents like cyanoacrylate, and particulate matter, are used to achieve this effect (Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, 2021). Conversely, pathological physical occlusion, such as that seen in deep vein thrombosis or intestinal obstruction, represents a disease state requiring medical intervention. Therefore, while it lacks a specific molecular structure, physical occlusion is a critical concept in both disease pathology and medical device-based therapy.
