Physical removal of foreign material from the ocular surface refers to a set of clinical techniques for extracting external objects (such as metal, plant matter, dust, or glass) that become lodged on or within the surface of the eye. Techniques include irrigation, gentle use of sterile cotton swabs, fine forceps, spuds, needles, or magnetic probes under local anesthesia. The procedure aims to immediately restore ocular surface integrity, minimize risk of infection and inflammation, and preserve vision. The procedure is commonly performed in clinical practice, especially in emergency and occupational settings. Adjunct medications are used to manage pain, prevent infection, and promote healing following removal.
