Physical tamponade of detached retina refers to the use of a mechanical agent (such as a gas bubble or silicone oil) or a structural support (such as a scleral buckle) to temporarily or permanently block the passage of fluid through retinal breaks and maintain apposition of the neurosensory retina to the retinal pigment epithelium following retinal detachment. This strategy provides the necessary time for retinopexy (laser or cryotherapy) to create a permanent seal; the choice of agent depends on the type and complexity of the detachment and patient factors.
