Overview

The physiological hemostatic system is a complex, multi-component biological process responsible for maintaining blood fluidity and preventing excessive blood loss following vascular injury (StatPearls, 2023). It operates through a delicate balance between procoagulant forces, which promote clot formation, and anticoagulant or fibrinolytic forces, which prevent systemic thrombosis and dissolve clots during the healing process (NIH, 2022). The system is traditionally divided into primary hemostasis, involving platelet adhesion and aggregation, and secondary hemostasis, characterized by the sequential activation of the coagulation cascade to form a stable fibrin mesh (PubMed, 2021). Key molecular components include platelets, von Willebrand factor, and various serine proteases such as Thrombin and Factor Xa. Pathological disruption of this balance can lead to life-threatening conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or hemophilia. Therapeutic strategies often target specific molecular components within this system to manage thrombotic risk or restore clotting function in bleeding disorders (PubChem, 2024). Because it represents a broad physiological process rather than a single receptor or enzyme, it is classified as a therapeutic area rather than a specific molecular target.
