Overview

The physiological milieu, or milieu intérieur, is a foundational concept in biology describing the internal environment of a multicellular organism, specifically the extracellular fluid that surrounds and nourishes cells (Bernard, 1865; Wikipedia, 2024). This concept, pioneered by the French physiologist Claude Bernard, posits that the stability of this internal environment is the essential condition for a free and independent life (Britannica, 2024). It is not a specific molecular target, such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather the systemic context in which all biochemical and cellular processes occur (Biology Online, 2021). Key biological functions associated with the milieu include the regulation of pH, temperature, and ionic concentrations, collectively maintained through the process of homeostasis (NIH, 2020). In clinical medicine, the physiological milieu is managed through the administration of intravenous fluids, electrolytes, and buffering agents to treat conditions like dehydration, shock, or metabolic acidosis (StatPearls, 2023). Because it represents a broad physiological state rather than a discrete protein or nucleic acid, it is considered an incorrect entry for a specific molecular target database.
