Overview

The physiological plasma protein ensemble refers to the collective group of proteins found in human blood plasma, primarily composed of albumin (approximately 60%) and various globulin fractions including alpha, beta, and gamma globulins (StatPearls, 2023). This ensemble is essential for maintaining the colloid osmotic (oncotic) pressure of the blood, a process critical for regulating the distribution of water between the intravascular and extravascular compartments (NCBI, 2022). Beyond fluid balance, these proteins act as transport carriers for a wide range of endogenous substances such as hormones and vitamins, as well as exogenous drugs, and they play critical roles in the immune response and the coagulation cascade (DrugBank, 2024). In a clinical context, 'Plasma Protein Fraction' (PPF) is a therapeutic product derived from pooled human plasma used to treat hypovolemia, shock, and hypoproteinemia (FDA, 2021). Because it represents a complex, heterogeneous mixture of proteins rather than a single molecular entity, it is generally classified as a blood derivative or volume expander rather than a specific molecular drug target (PubMed, 2020). Consequently, while it is a recognized entity in pharmacological databases, it does not represent a discrete molecular target for drug discovery in the traditional sense.
