Phytochemicals are a broad class of **bioactive chemical compounds produced by plants** through primary or secondary metabolism. They are not a single molecule or receptor but rather encompass thousands—possibly over 10,000—distinct compounds found in fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, and other plant-based foods. However—as a group—they are not considered essential nutrients nor do they represent a single therapeutic target like an enzyme or receptor would. Instead they represent a vast array of structurally diverse molecules with varied biological activities.
