Overview

Phytophthora infestans messenger RNA (mRNA) refers to the collective set of protein-coding transcripts produced by the oomycete pathogen responsible for late blight in potatoes and tomatoes (Whisson et al., 2005). These mRNA molecules are essential for the pathogen's life cycle, serving as templates for the translation of proteins required for growth, reproduction, and host infection (Jahan et al., 2015). In modern agricultural biotechnology, specific P. infestans mRNAs are targeted using RNA interference (RNAi) strategies, such as Host-Induced Gene Silencing (HIGS) and Spray-Induced Gene Silencing (SIGS) (Sanju et al., 2015). By introducing double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules that are complementary to essential pathogen genes, the corresponding mRNA is degraded or its translation is inhibited, effectively silencing the gene and preventing disease progression (Koch & Kogel, 2014). This approach provides a highly specific alternative to traditional chemical fungicides, although it requires precise sequence selection to avoid off-target effects on the host plant or other non-target organisms (Frontiers in Plant Science, 2015).
