Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF)

Target
PEDF
Molecular classification
Serine protease inhibitor (serpin) superfamily, Glycoprotein, Secreted protein
01

Overview

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF), also known as Serpin F1, is a multifunctional, secreted glycoprotein belonging to the non-inhibitory serpin family. It is a potent endogenous inhibitor of angiogenesis and exhibits neurotrophic and antitumor properties. PEDF is widely expressed across various tissues and organs and plays a role in retinal and neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, fibrosis, and metabolic syndrome. Its expression is regulated by sex steroids/hormones and TGF-beta signaling.

02

Mechanism of action

PEDF exerts its effects through multiple mechanisms, including promoting neuronal differentiation and survival, inhibiting angiogenesis by inducing endothelial cell apoptosis and suppressing proliferation, and modulating inflammation and fibrosis. The precise signaling pathways involved depend on the specific microenvironment and post-translational modifications.
