Overview

The pigmented ciliary epithelium is the outer layer of the bilayered ciliary epithelium lining the ciliary body of the eye[1][3][7]. Composed of cuboidal cells packed with melanin granules, this layer plays a supportive role in absorbing stray light within the eye and contributes to the blood-aqueous barrier. It is developmentally continuous with the retinal pigment epithelium and the pigmented layer of the iris[3][7]. While it participates in ion and solute transport in conjunction with the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium and contains gap junctions for intercellular communication, its principal function is light absorption rather than aqueous humor secretion[3]. The pigmented ciliary epithelium is not a direct molecular or pharmacological target in current therapeutic strategies[1][3][7].
