PILR alpha associated neural protein (PIANP) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a ligand for the paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor alpha (PILRA). PIANP is expressed in neural tissues, where it is believed to participate in immune regulation by modulating inhibitory signaling through interactions with its receptor. Its functions include potential involvement in innate immune responses and antigen processing, with particular relevance to neural tissue immunobiology. The gene is alternatively spliced, resulting in multiple transcript variants. No direct therapeutic drugs, safety liabilities, or biomarker status are currently associated with PIANP, but it may have implications for diseases involving neuroimmune mechanisms.
Since PIANP is not currently a direct pharmacological target, there are no mechanisms of action described for drugs targeting this molecule specifically. For PILRA-targeted drugs (should they exist), mechanism might focus on disrupting or enhancing PIANP-PILRA binding, thereby modifying immunoregulatory signaling
