Overview

Pinopodes are temporary, dome-like protrusions on the apical membrane of uterine epithelial cells, most prominent during the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, coinciding with the "implantation window." Their formation is progesterone-dependent and they regresses with estrogen exposure[1][2][3]. Pinopodes assist in the absorption of uterine fluid (pinocytosis), secretion of nutrients, and are believed to facilitate blastocyst attachment and successful implantation. The presence and density of pinopodes are used as a marker for endometrial receptivity, particularly in the context of fertility treatments[1].
