PITPNM2 antisense RNA 1 (PITPNM2-AS1)

Target
PITPNM2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

PITPNM2 antisense RNA 1 (PITPNM2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the PITPNM2 gene. It is classified as an antisense RNA and is not a protein or receptor; rather, it regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally. PITPNM2-AS1 is reported to be overexpressed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and cell lines, where it promotes cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), in part by acting as a molecular sponge for microRNA-32-5p. Silencing PITPNM2-AS1 suppresses these oncogenic properties, suggesting a role as a potential diagnostic and prognostic cancer biomarker. No clinically approved drugs target PITPNM2-AS1 directly.

Mechanism of action

Acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging microRNA-32-5p; modulates downstream signaling relevant to proliferation, migration, and EMT

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expressionRegulation of cell proliferationModulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)Regulation of cell migration and invasion
04

Disease associations

Cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)possibly implicated in other cancers, though not definitively established
05

Safety considerations

Not established; as a non-coding RNA, safety concerns are primarily theoretical or experimental and not clinically described
