Pitta dosha

01

Overview

Pitta dosha is not a molecule, receptor, or recognized therapeutic target in the biomedical sense. Instead, it is a fundamental concept in Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient Indian traditional system, where it represents one of the three bodily “doshas” or functional energies—the others being Vata and Kapha[1][2][7]. Pitta dosha is described as the energetic force composed primarily of the elements “fire” and “water,” and is said to govern metabolism, digestion (“Agni,” the digestive fire), enzymatic activity, vision, intellect, and heat regulation in the body[1][2][4][6]. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe several subtypes of Pitta believed to manage different physiological domains: - Bhrajaka Pitta (skin and temperature regulation) - Alochaka Pitta (vision) - Sadhaka Pitta (cognition and emotions) - Ranjaka Pitta (blood and liver function)[1] In Ayurveda, a balanced Pitta dosha is associated with strong digestion, radiant skin, sharp intellect, and decisiveness, while imbalances are traditionally believed to manifest as irritability, inflammation, acid reflux, skin rashes, and heat-related disorders in the body and mind[2][3][5]. There is no scientific evidence for the existence of Pitta dosha as a molecular or physiological entity, nor is it classified as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other molecular target in modern medicine[7]. No approved drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns—in the biomedical sense—are directly linked to “Pitta dosha.” It is best understood as a holistic, energetic, and constitutional framework in Ayurvedic practice, not as a molecular, cellular, or pharmacological target.
