Overview

The pituitary gland is a small endocrine gland located at the base of the brain within the sella turcica. It is regulated by the hypothalamus. The gland comprises two main parts: the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis), which synthesizes and secretes hormones including GH, PRL, TSH, ACTH, FSH, and LH, and is derived from Rathke's pouch; and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis), which stores and releases ADH and Oxytocin produced by the hypothalamus, and is an extension of neural tissue. The anterior pituitary contains specific cell types (acidophils like somatotrophs and lactotrophs; basophils like thyrotrophs, gonadotrophs, and corticotrophs) producing different hormones. The development of the pituitary is regulated by transcription factors like PIT-1, t-PIT, and SF-1. The pituitary gland is not a single molecular target but an organ with complex cellular and molecular components. Clinical significance includes benign tumors (adenomas) and insufficient hormone production (hypopituitarism).
