PLAC8 (placenta-specific 8, ONZIN, C15) is an intracellular cysteine-rich protein implicated in chromatin binding, regulation of transcription, control of autophagy, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and immune modulation. It is widely expressed in epithelial, immune, and placental tissues, and functions in disease states such as cancer (promoting EMT and chemoresistance), viral infections (modulating the host immune response and directly facilitating viral replication), metabolic disorders, and inflammation. Elevated PLAC8 correlates with disease progression, poor prognosis, and resistance to therapy in several malignancies and may act as a critical biomarker and therapeutic target in relevant pathologies.
