Placental mesenchymal stromal cells are multipotent, immunomodulatory cells isolated from the placenta, capable of modulating both innate and adaptive immune responses. These cells suppress T cell and B cell responses, promote regulatory T cell formation, and alter the function of antigen-presenting cells through both direct cell–cell interactions and the secretion of immunoregulatory molecules (e.g., TGF-β, IL-10). Due to these properties, placental MSCs are being investigated as therapeutic agents in inflammatory, autoimmune, and transplantation-related diseases, although their precise mechanisms of action and long-term safety require further research.
