Target intelligence / Profile preview
The **plant cell wall** is a rigid, multi-layered extracellular structure found in plant cells but absent in animal cells[1][4][5][6]. Its main components include *cellulose microfibrils*, *hemicellulose*, *pectins*, and, in some cases, *lignin* and structural proteins[1][3][4][7][8][9]. Plant cell walls provide mechanical support, maintain cell shape, allow controlled cell expansion, mediate cell adhesion, and protect against environmental stresses and pathogens[1][2][3][4][6]. The wall is arranged in up to three layers: - The **middle lamella** (mainly pectins) glues cells together[1][4][5][6]. - The **primary cell wall** (mainly cellulose microfibrils in a matrix of hemicellulose and pectin) is flexible and allows cell growth[1][3][4][6]. - The **secondary cell wall** (deposited internally once the cell stops expanding; rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and often lignin) provides additional rigidity and impermeability[1][3][4][5][6][7]. The plant cell wall is not a single protein, receptor, drug target, or enzyme, but rather a structural composite assembled from multiple macromolecules. While some therapeutics (like certain pathogen-directed agents) target biosynthesis pathways of cell wall components in microbes, the plant cell wall as a structure is not a direct therapeutic target in human medicine or pharmaceuticals, nor is it a receptor or signaling protein[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].
