Overview

The plant root system refers to the entire collective structure of roots in a plant. Its principal functions include anchoring the plant in soil, absorbing water and dissolved minerals for transport to the plant, and storing food and nutrients. Root systems are structurally diverse, including tap root systems (a main root with lateral branches, typical in dicots) and fibrous root systems (a dense network of roots, typical in monocots). Specialized roots like adventitious, aerial, prop, or tuberous roots provide additional functions such as extra support, vegetative reproduction, or adaptation to diverse environments. At the tissue level, roots consist of the root cap (protection), meristematic zones (growth), epidermal cells with root hairs (absorption), ground tissue (storage), and vascular tissues (transport). Molecular control of root system development involves numerous genetic, hormonal, and environmental interactions, but the "plant root system" itself is not a single molecular entity or therapeutic target[5][3][2][4][7][8][9][6].
