Overview

Plant sterols, also called phytosterols, are a subgroup of sterols found in plants that structurally resemble cholesterol and serve as essential components of plant cell membranes[1][3]. Common plant sterols include β-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol[8]. They are most abundant in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains[3]. Plant sterols are not biological receptors, enzymes, transporters, or conventional therapeutic targets. Instead, they are utilized as dietary components that lower LDL cholesterol levels by inhibiting intestinal absorption of cholesterol[1][7][3]. Their bioavailability is poor due to low solubility, leading to interest in esterified derivatives for enhanced use in fortified foods[7]. While observational and interventional studies show lipid-lowering effects, there is insufficient evidence that plant sterols reduce cardiovascular events or mortality[3]. Safety concerns are generally minimal for the general population at recommended intake levels, but excessive consumption in individuals with genetic disorders such as sitosterolemia can be harmful. Plant sterols are chemically classified as lipids (sterols, steroids), not as molecular targets in the pharmaceutical sense.
