Overview

Plant sterol-mediated inhibition of intestinal cholesterol uptake refers to the process by which plant sterols (phytosterols and stanols) reduce the intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol. Plant sterols structurally resemble cholesterol and compete with it for incorporation into micelles in the gut, reducing cholesterol solubilization and uptake. Additional mechanisms include interference with cholesterol transporters (such as NPC1L1), preventing cholesterol esterification and chylomicron formation, and stimulating the efflux of cholesterol from enterocytes into the intestinal lumen (TICE pathway). This results in lower serum LDL cholesterol and a potential reduction of cardiovascular disease risk. This is not a single drug target but a pathway modulated by dietary components[1][2][3][4].
