Plasma calcium level measures the concentration of calcium ions in the blood plasma. Calcium in blood is present in three major forms: ionized (free) calcium, protein-bound (mainly to albumin), and complexed with anions. The body tightly regulates plasma ionized calcium via hormones such as parathyroid hormone, vitamin D (as calcitriol), and calcitonin, with the skeleton, kidneys, and intestines serving as key organs for calcium exchange, absorption, and reabsorption. Abnormal plasma calcium levels—either too high (hypercalcemia) or too low (hypocalcemia)—can result in serious medical issues, often reflecting underlying endocrine, renal, or metabolic pathologies. Although plasma calcium level is a critical physiological parameter and biomarker, it is not a molecular entity or direct pharmacological target[1][2][3][4][5][8].
