Immune effector cells are a diverse group of cells within the immune system that actively respond to stimuli—such as infection, disease, or abnormal cell growth—and carry out specific functions to defend the body. These cells are typically short-lived and become activated during an immune response. Their primary role is to eliminate pathogens, infected cells, or cancerous cells through various mechanisms, including direct killing, cytokine secretion, and antibody production. Examples include cytotoxic T cells, helper T cells, plasma cells, and NK cells. They are key targets of immunotherapies such as CAR-T cell therapy and TIL therapy.
