Overview

Plasma coagulation factors and platelets constitute the primary components of the human hemostatic system, responsible for preventing blood loss through the formation of clots at sites of vascular injury (StatPearls, 2023). The coagulation factors are a series of plasma proteins, mostly serine proteases, that operate in a highly regulated cascade to generate thrombin, which subsequently converts soluble fibrinogen into an insoluble fibrin mesh (NIH, 2022). Simultaneously, platelets (thrombocytes) adhere to the subendothelial matrix, become activated, and aggregate to form a primary plug, providing a surface for further coagulation factor assembly (PubMed, 2021). Dysregulation of these processes can lead to life-threatening conditions, including arterial or venous thrombosis, or conversely, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia (NIH, 2023). Pharmacological targeting of this system is a cornerstone of cardiovascular medicine, utilizing anticoagulants like Factor Xa inhibitors and antiplatelet agents like P2Y12 antagonists to manage and prevent thromboembolic events (PubChem, 2024).
