The plasma coagulation pathway is a complex series of enzymatic reactions involving various clotting factors that culminate in the formation of an insoluble fibrin clot (StatPearls). This common pathway involves the activation of Factor X, which then converts prothrombin into thrombin, the central enzyme responsible for transforming soluble fibrinogen into fibrin strands (PubMed). Dysregulation of this system can lead to pathological states such as thrombosis, leading to myocardial infarction or stroke, or bleeding disorders such as hemophilia (StatPearls). Pharmacological targeting of this pathway is a cornerstone of cardiovascular medicine, utilizing anticoagulants that specifically inhibit key enzymes like Factor Xa or Thrombin to prevent unwanted clot formation (NCBI). Because this pathway involves a multi-step cascade of distinct molecular targets, it is classified as a pathway rather than a single therapeutic target.
