Plasma globulins comprise a diverse family of proteins found in blood plasma, usually classified as alpha, beta, and gamma globulins. They perform several vital biological functions including acting as carrier proteins (transport of hormones, metals, and lipids), enzymes, complement system components, and especially as immunoglobulins (gamma globulins, the body's major circulating antibodies). The globulin fraction is not a single molecule or drug target, but a broad class; thus, the term “plasma globulin” does not describe one discrete therapeutic target and should not be considered a standard drug discovery or biological target entity.
