Plasma kallikrein precursor, also known as prekallikrein, is a glycoprotein encoded by the KLKB1 gene. It is synthesized in the liver and circulates in the blood. Upon activation, primarily by factor XIIa, it is converted into plasma kallikrein, an active serine protease involved in blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, kinin generation, and inflammation.
