Plasma lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity refers to the enzymatic function of LPL, a key extracellular enzyme anchored to the vascular endothelium, primarily in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and heart tissue. Its main role is to hydrolyze triglycerides carried by circulating lipoproteins—specifically chylomicrons and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL)—into free fatty acids and glycerol.
