The epithelial cell membrane (more precisely, the plasma membrane of an epithelial cell) is a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins that forms the outer boundary of the cell, separating the intracellular environment from the extracellular space[5][7][9]. Epithelial membranes show distinct domains (apical, lateral, basal) that reflect their polarity and specialized functions in absorption, secretion, protection, and selective permeability[6][9]. The membrane contains a fluid mosaic of phospholipids, cholesterol, glycolipids, and proteins, with specific proteins serving roles in transport, signal transduction, and cell adhesion[9]. While its structure and overall functions are vital for epithelial cell biology and tissue homeostasis, it is not considered a drug target per se, but rather a cellular feature hosting numerous potential drug targets in the form of membrane proteins.
